Laser eye surgeries can be named in different ways among the public. The most commonly used expression is “laser eye surgery”. But is there really such an expression? In other words, is the eye really scratched during laser surgery? Let’s answer the curious question and explain where the expression comes from.

Is the eye scratched with laser?

The name of laser eye scratching is based on the methods used in the past. It should be noted that the method called radial keratotomy, which was used in the 1980s, did not use laser.

In this method, abbreviated as RK, small scratches were made on the transparent part of the eye with diamond-tipped blades. Although no laser is used, the name of the operation has remained as laser eye removal among the people because of the scratches made in this method.
