What are Keratoconus Treatments?

There are some important eye diseases that directly affect the quality of vision and progress. If we want to create a list of these diseases, keratoconus would be the first disease to be listed. Because in keratoconus disease, the cornea, which is very important for visual function, is deformed and we see that this deformity progresses over time and the cornea becomes a little thinner. The fact that it is a progressive disease that gradually deteriorates the quality of vision makes Keratoconus treatments just as important. Factors such as early diagnosis and rapid determination of appropriate treatment are very important to maximize the patient’s quality of vision. So which treatments are applied for this progressive disease? Let’s take a closer look at the treatments.

How is Keratoconus Treated? Which Methods Are Used?

In fact, if you look at it, we can evaluate the disease as 3 different stages according to its progression. It may be possible to make a definition such as the initial stage, the stage where progression continues and finally advanced stage cases. Because the condition of the patient’s eye is also very important in treatments. When we talk about treatments, we will make a classification according to these stages.

Use of Special Contact Lenses

If there is an onset of keratoconus and the patient is still in the early stages, the first step is to try to improve the patient’s vision a little more with the use of special glasses and special contact lenses. We see that this step, which we can show as the first step among keratoconus treatments, is not always sufficient.

Treatment with Corneal Cross-linking

If the disease continues to progress, corneal cross-linking treatment is preferred to stop the progression of the disease and to re-strengthen the weakened cornea. Let’s talk about this treatment briefly and discuss its main purpose.

  • In this treatment called cross-linking, a special material called riboflavin is applied on the cornea.
  • Then UV light is applied and the resulting reaction strengthens the collagen fibers in the cornea and stops the progression of Keratoconus.

Although it is a very preferred method among keratoconus treatments, it should be noted that the condition of the patient’s eye is also important here.

Cornea Transplant Treatment in Advanced Stage

If the disease is very advanced, then the treatment may involve a corneal transplant. In corneal ring implantation, a ring of corneal tissue is implanted into the patient’s cornea and the patient regains healthy vision.

Here, keranatural, which is completely natural human collagen or corneal tissue, stands out. Keranatural is a small, semi-circular piece of collagen/cornea implanted into the cornea for reshaping and is completely natural human corneal tissue. Recently, keranatural is also frequently preferred in corneal ring implantation.

CAIRS Technique

CAIRS is one of the state-of-the-art treatment techniques designed to address the adverse effects of keratoconus. This technique uses natural human collagen, a substance that is both safe and unique to the body, to strengthen the cornea. The procedure involves the precise placement of a corneal allograft intrastromal ring segment, which is carefully implanted into the cornea using femtosecond laser technology.

This progression for keratoconus treatments is completely related to the patient’s eye. What the patient should do is to search for the best doctor in Keratoconus treatment, to reach a specialist doctor and to learn the condition of the eye by undergoing a detailed eye examination. In this way, the specialist doctor will ensure that steps are taken for preventive or direct treatment in advanced stages according to the condition of the eye.
